My worst enemy

Hi Guys!

Daughter started school and luckily she loved the new school, hope this keeps up! I met with the teacher this morning, as I had never met her before, and I left feeling like I needed to take some etiquette class or something. Everyone is so proper and Catholic.. and there I walk in donning black skinny jeans, a black TWILIGHT t-shirt and my black Adidas..Totally not their style.
Ms. Fox did seem nice and hopefully all will go great!

I gotta say, I started writing my book the last week of June and ever since i have been staying until the wee hours of the night writing and then, whenever possible sleeping in. Going to bed now at 1am and waking up at 6 is no fun. Yesterday i took it in stride and was a ball of energy, today not so much. I am a grouch. After dropping of the kid in school we went to the gym, by we i mean hubby and 3yo son (who LOVES to go play at the daycare there as he gets to play basketball). I passed out as soon as i got back in the truck from talking to the teacher and at the gym i was a zombie. I had Dubstep station on Pandora at full blast but my energy was like my phone battery, in the low 30s. Now i am finally home and ready to tackle some writing.. although the bed is calling my name quite loudly.

This brings me to my actual post, geez, i can really get sidetracked. If you follow me on twitter (@luceduceswing) you might have read last night about chapter 26. Shy of 6,000 words and i had to delete it all. I didnt though, delete it that is. I simply copied it and saved it in a new doc. It is very frustrating when you change a MINIMAL detail and BAM! you have to re write everything! I am sure with time i will get used to it and it wont be so much work to fix it, but for now.. the Delete button is my worst enemy.

Have you had any stories like this one? What have you had to erase and why?

Well kiddos, i am really debating if it is writing time or sleepy time. Decisions, decisions, decisions..

Muah!

  1. Yes, several stories like that one… I deleted my first three drafts of my WIP. But a growing process happens after every draft and after every revision.

The more we grow the more we delete or copy and save, I like the save part—but normally I grow so much there is nothing worth salvaging!

  2. Just found your blog through Twitter (@ClaireCWrites) - hi! :)

I've really just started writing my YA novel, but I recently made a MINOR plot change and had to essentially rewrite the whole beginning! I know that a lot of people say you shouldn't go back and edit until your first draft is done, but the story just didn't make sense anymore, and I felt like I needed to redo it in order to have a better sense of where the plot was going. But it's awful to have to cut so many hours of hard work. It feels like going backwards a little.

  3. Hi #299! Hahaha I remember you :)

Yes, especially when the detail seems so insignificant, yet so meaningful at the same time. It was a bummer, I assure you. 6K words is no joke.. But all in all, after i re-wrote it (and im not even done yet with it) I have 5,983 words.. so it should give me even more words than the original.

I was always told to stick with my story.. but as you write it EVOLVES so much that you just can't keep going the same path anymore. There are lots of twists and turns and sometimes even some dead ends, but it all makes it even more worth it when you get to THE END. :)
    ..I hope!

  4. Hello, Lucy. I got your note on Twitter this morning to stalk you... What? Crap! Did I read that wrong? ;)

  5. Same thing happened to me. I made a small, simple change to address a plot hole & improve character dynamics. A small change really, that resulted in me having to completely (and I mean completely) rewrite Act I. In fact, I creating Act 1 from scratch as my old Act I is now Act II.

  6. Jimmy- you are awesome! Thanks for coming by and saying Hi :)

LaTessa- same thing happened to me. It was really annoying, especially when i REALLY liked what i had previosuly written. But then again... i love it even more now ;) haha but to the delete button: I still dont like you!

  7. Oh, how I can relate! My son is with me every 4 months (long story short: his dad and I divorced just last year, and then I remarried - they're in Germany; I'm in England. Military), and we homeschool him.

This means that finding time to write is difficult! So when my son goes back to his dad for his 4-month "turn" with the little guy (OK, he's 8 1/2, so not so little), I spend that time putting in 8-10 hour days of writing!

Yes, I've done the late, late nights too, just to find time to write. Ugh. But you gotta do what you gotta do, eh?
