This right here is for every person that looks at me weird when I say I am a stay at home Mom.
"I wish I could do nothing like you."
"Oh, must be nice, huh?"
Those are some of the most popular answers I get... so to all of those people I say:
“You’re JUST a mom?" or "Do you ever work?"
Uhhh yes, I am a Mom! That makes me an alarm clock, cook, maid, waitress, teacher, nurse, handyman, security officer, photographer, counselor, chauffeur, event planner, personal assistant, ATM & I scare away the boogie man. I don't get holidays, sick pay or days off. I work through the DAY & NIGHT. I am on call 24/7 for the rest of my life. And that's just with my first job... BEING A MOM!!
I may not be anything to you but I am everything to someone!
Please share if you agree! Being a Mom and a stay at home Mom, is no walk in the park!
XOXO

I'm a mom, a single mom. And I've also got a day job and I'm a fiction writer like you too. So yes, being a mom is hard work, and being a single mom with a day job is tougher still.
ReplyDeleteI do wish I could JUST be a stay at home mom. Not that it's easy being only that, but it would mean a little less stress! ;)
I so hear you! Oh, if I could only hire someone to wash cat puke off the floor, do the interminable dishes, make sure my kids get frequent baths and do their homework, and do the countless other tasks I seem to have been assigned.
ReplyDeleteIt's a thankless job. And payless, too, which also stinks. It does have its payoffs, though.
I was a full time stay at home mom for 7 years, and even though I work outside the home now, it is only 2 days a week. (I went back part time when both kids were in school)
ReplyDeleteThose years at home with my little ones were far more challenging than my "day job" now. I can remember being jealous of my husband because I knew he was having all sorts of adult interactions at work and I was stuck watching that episode of "Go Diego, Go," for the eleventh time.
It was a huge financial sacrifice for me to stay home, but I wouldn't have traded that time with my kids for anything. They are only little for a short time.
I like my day job. Without it, I would be bored at home alone all day, every day during the week. The extra money helps too. I think it is better for the kids if Mom stays home in the early days. After all, if you hand the baby over to the day care lady, she's doing all the teaching, witnessing the milestones, handling the dicipline. I also understand the decision isn't that easy for some moms, as they may be single or the family can't live on one income. And I respect their right to choose as well.
Oh, I've been asked those questions so many times. People in the French side of the family look down their nose because obviously feminism means that I should be out of the house "working".
ReplyDeleteI think mom's are unappreciated everywhere. If you are a mom and work outside the house, people will think you don't take care of your kids well enough. If like me, you are a stay at home mom, they'll think you are lazy. Yes, lazy. I had a conversation with one of my husband's cousins and she had the cheek to ask if when we moved to the US, I would get a proper job. Proper job? First, she doesn't think writing will amount to anything *coughs* and second, even though she could have been a stay at home mom, as she pointed out, she chose the hard work over being lazy. I wish I could have throttle her then. Of course I just told her. Well I have a job. I'm mom, and when my baby goes to school, just like I did when my eldest went into school, I'll get a part time somewhere.
So to mom's everywhere, working in or out of the house Thank You! *gives cookies*
I hear ya! You're preaching to the choir here ;)
